5 Ways to Lose Followers, FAST!

You worked hard to get the followers you have on social media. Don’t push them away! Here are five quick and easy ways to do just that.

1. GET CONTROVERSIAL

We all know people who thrive on healthy debate. While there is nothing wrong with this in the personal realm there are certain hot-button issues that you should avoid on your business pages. Topics such as religion and politics can create an immediate division between you and your clients. Is it really worth the risk?

2. GET TECHNICAL

Every industry really has a language all its own. Think about your company and the words you use with each other throughout the day. Would your clients understand immediately what you were talking about? For example, “Can you please adjust the kerning on the HR of the CMYK BC?” While our Creative Director, Tonya, would know exactly what I meant, most of that question probably sounded like gibberish to you. Speak your clients’ language, not your company’s internal language.

3. GET REPETITIVE

While we fully believe in following a sharing schedule, as discussed in this great KISSmetrics blog, repetition in social media can also mean a long, slow death for your follower engagement. Vary your topics, type, length and tone of your posts to make the most of the time you have your clients’ attention.

4. GET BORING

The easiest way to reduce follower engagement is to be inactive! For example, Business Insider estimates that there are nearly 697 million inactive Twitter accounts. Be honest, are you one of them? It should go without saying that an inactive social profile has inactive followers. The more you post, the more opportunities you have to interact with your clients and increase business.

 5. GET SELF-CENTERED

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, no one likes a friend who talks only of him/herself and what he/she has to offer. Don’t be afraid to feature an article or post of other influential parities in your industry. This shows your clients that your knowledge base is up-to-date and you are confident enough in your services to recognize others who are succeeding.

In the world of social media it is a fine balance of keeping your followers’ interest and letting them drift away. Avoid these five frequent mistakes, and you’ll be well on your way to happy followers turned into happy clients!
